Adolescents are assisted in living a healthy life without the use of alcohol and other drugs. Services are offered to youth on an individual, family, group, and community level. Such services include:
- Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program I
This diversion program, set up with the court system, gives first time underage drinking violators the choice of losing the diver’s license for 90 days or completing an alcohol education class. Other referral sources are accepted. The program utilizes a research-based, evidence-based curriculum entitled Prime For Life. The curriculum directly addresses prevention of alcoholism and addiction. Classes are held one time per month, Friday 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Cost is $75.
- Tobacco Diversion Program
The Tobacco Diversion Program is for youth ages twelve to seventeen who are referred due to a tobacco citation, school violation, or self/family referred. The goal of the program is to move teens closer to thinking about or preparing to quit smoking. Class components include facts about tobacco and tobacco use, addiction, cost, the role tobacco plays in your life, healthy lifestyles, and strategies for change. Classes are held on a quarterly basis, on a Saturday from 8:30a.m.-12:00 noon. Cost is forty dollars.
- Teen Anger Management
This program consists of ten hours of education. The program is for court and social service referrals of adjudicated juveniles, ages fourteen through seventeen. Other referral sources are also accepted. Youth work through lessons on feelings, styles of anger, problem-solving skills, coping strategies, family violence, and personal goals. The curriculum, Aggression Replacement Training (ART), is a research and evidence-based program. The group runs consistently every Thursday from 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. Program participants are required to complete an individual session with a parent/guardian to complete program intake paperwork. A total of ten consecutive group sessions need to be attended. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend every other week to learn with their child. An individual session is completed after completing the group sessions to complete closure paperwork and address any needed referrals. There is no cost for Dunn County participants.
- Wisconsin Wins Program - Tobacco Compliance Checks
The Wisconsin Wins program is implemented throughout Dunn County by Arbor Place, Inc. To implement the tobacco compliance check, a team of one adult and two youth complete the checks, with the youth attempting to purchase tobacco products from tobacco retailers. If no sale is made, the establishment and clerk are congratulated and given a certificate acknowledging their service. If a sale is made, information is forwarded to local law enforcement. Tobacco compliance checks are implemented with the support of local law enforcement. Compliance checks are a proven effective strategy to reduce youth access to tobacco.
- Youth Development/Leadership Trainings
Dunn County youth, both middle school and high school aged, are recruited to participate in several youth leadership trainings and events throughout the year. These may include: Venture Forward Camps and one day learning events. All events promote living a drug-free lifestyle and aim to give young people the tools they need to succeed in life. Throughout the year, there are also trainings for adults who work with youth. Additional trainings are provided upon request. There is no cost for this service.
- Dunn County Partnership For Youth
The Director of Prevention & Adolescent Services serves as the chairperson for the Dunn County Partnership For Youth (DCPFY). The DCPFY is a collaborative coalition of members representing a broad range of community sectors. The mission of the group is to Promote Safe and Healthy Communities for Youth. Regular business meetings are held every other month and provide a venue to collaborate with community partners on programming that positively impacts youth. There are several committees established within the DCPFY: Alcohol Environmental Committee, Youth Development Committee, Parenting Committee, and Membership Committee. Specific activities of the Alcohol Environmental Committee include alcohol compliance checks, party patrols, service evaluations, policy change, and community briefings. Due to positive collaborations, within the past four years over $800,000 in state and federal grant funds were secured and brought to our community to help decrease youth substance use. Membership is open to all members of the community and there is no fee.
